Gilmore Girls: Mark of the Fall

Adeeba Aman, ’28

The leaves are changing colors, the weather is getting cold. Fall is the perfect time to drink coffee and walk around Central Park. It’s sweater season, so outfits become easier to compose. Winter is right around the corner, and with bated breath we look forward to the holiday season and winter break. But the reason that fall is my favorite season, above all others, is that I get to watch “Gilmore Girls”!

“Gilmore Girls” is one of the most popular shows streamed in the fall, many people taking delight in watching the two Lorelais all over again. It is a chef’s kiss! It remains the same whether you’re Team Dean, Jess, or Logan.

People who have never watched “Gilmore Girls” may be wondering why it so perfectly emanates from the fall. To be honest, it’s kind of something that we make up in our own minds. The show spans fall, winter, spring, and summer many times over its seven seasons. However, with Rory and Lorelai traveling in the warmer months, the show often skips over the summer season and orients itself in fall. Also, fun fact, “Gilmore Girls” was originally aired in the fall! When fall comes to the town of Stars Hollow, everyone decorates the town and its shops. Taylor, the town selectman and everyone’s favorite grocer, even forces Luke to decorate his diner, though he is one grumpy man. The Gilmores’ scarves, coffee obsessions, and four Thanksgivings make this season feel even cozier.

As I grow up, I have developed a love-hate relationship with Rory. At times I want to punch her in the face. But then, when she reads a new book, or applies to Yale, I want to be just like her – as studious as possible. She’s made many bad decisions - which you’ll understand if you’ve watched the show - and yet her mother always supports her. Lorelai is always by her side!

Personally, I could never imagine having a relationship like that. I am close with my mother, but I believe that Rory and Lorelai’s mother-daughter relationship is not healthy. Though it would be nice to have a mother who doesn't care if I got hit by a deer or failed an assignment, I would rather have a mother who points out my wrongdoings, instead of sugar coating them with pancakes and Luke’s coffee.

Rory is the definition of an academic weapon. She. Is. So. Smart. After trying very hard at Chilton, she got acceptances from three Ivy League Schools: Harvard, Princeton, and Yale! She always put studying over everything else, but she still made mistakes. She has read three hundred thirty nine books in her life. Three whole digits worth of books, by the time she was in Yale. She had competition, in the form of Paris, but she taught us that competition can soon become your closest friends. Rory was student body vice president, and represented her school very well.

Whether you are a newcomer or a committed “Gilmore Girls” fan, “Gilmore Girls” provides the perfect fall spirit, and Stars Hollow welcomes you!
