Club Feature: Best Buddies

Best Buddies helps create opportunities for people with disabilities. It allows for a more inclusive environment to be established between people with and without disabilities and allows friendships to flourish. Best Buddies discusses sensitive topics about how we should react to moments where people around you are being insensitive to the disbaled community. It allows great new one-on-one friendships to develop when students are paired with an individual with disabilities to get to know one another -- allowing one to understand that our differences are not as large as our similarities. We are able to work one-and-one with each other, whether it is playing a game, hosting social events, or having discussions about existing problems when it comes to the disability community. Best Buddies as well allows for a safe space for people with disabilities. Mindfulness, respect, and an open mindset, are meaningful traits that one can obtain in the club. In addition, Best Buddies helps to break down societal barriers between people with and without disabilities and is a valuable organization/club that strives for growth, change, and improvement. Currently, we are brainstorming different ideas to raise money for Best Buddies to support the development of the BHSEC chapter along with the other programs Best Buddies offers to the public. We do, however, acknowledge the circumstances of being in a pandemic and know that not everyone is able to donate. All in all, Best Buddies is a meaningful club that actively strives for change the way the world perceives disabilities.
