A Movie Review on “Happy Death Day: 2U”

Happy Death Day 2U:

“Happy Death Day: 2U” is the sequel to the mystery/slasher film; “Happy Death Day”. The main character, Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe) is a college student, that is stuck in a parallel universe, where a masked killer with a baby mask kills her and her friends over and over again. This leaves Tree and her friends with the task of finding and defeating the masked killer. To be fair, I wasn’t very enthusiastic about this movie, and I’m not very enthusiastic about writing about it either; the movie didn’t feel particularly special to me, as the this was a sequel to an already mediocre movie that contained a concept explored in a variety of other movies (the idea of being stuck in a time loop until a certain goal is achieved.) The movie gives the impression that it’s thriller/horror-related, when in reality, it doesn’t feel like that. In fact, I’d say that there’s more comedy than horror in this movie — which isn’t a bad thing, I just think that it’s slightly misleading. There is some “horror” in the film, though. The reason why I say “horror” with quotation marks is because it comes in the forms of cheesy jump scares and hallway chases, that just simply don’t suffice. I wouldn’t have a problem for it, if it weren’t for the fact that it was advertised as a thriller/horror movie. The main actor, Jessica Rothe, is the paper maché of this movie. She keeps it together. She’s a very energetic and passionate actor, and I value her performance in this movie. I’d like to note that although I wasn’t very enthusiastic about watching the film, it wasn’t a boring movie. If you don’t try to dissect the film piece-by-piece, it’s actually a fun watch.
