SONGS OF THE MONTH BY GENRE

Classical/ Instrumental:

Miroirs III. Une barque sur l’ocean- Maurice Ravel, Andre Laplante

In the least pretentious way possible this song sounds like what I think stars would sound like if they played instruments up in space. Does that make sense? I know this word is so overused, but this is truly an ethereal piece. It begins and ends with a beautiful and light piano instrumental which progressively rises and falls in ferocity through the use of crescendos and layering instruments throughout the song. This was intentional-- the title translates to “A Boat on the Ocean,” and it’s supposed to follow the flow of ocean currents, accounting for the “crests” and “troughs” of the song’s intensity. I’d say it’s a musical-sea-journey everybody should experience.

Rock:

Strangers- The Kinks

Definitely not the most head-banging rock piece I could have started off with (that’ll come next time) but a tear-jerker to say the least. The lyrics, although bittersweet, are quite universal and paired with a simple blues-y guitar that just makes this fit all the criteria for a good song. Also, when you take into consideration that this is the Kinks, this song is definitely a little different from most of their other stuff which makes it all the more special in my opinion. Spectacular song-- except if you listen too closely you might cry just a tad.

Rap/ R&B:

12.38- Childish Gambino ft. 21 Savage

This is one of the best songs off the 3.15.20 album hands down. Although I don’t think this album tops “Because the Internet” or even “‘Awaken, My Love!’” (potentially an impossible ask), it’s nonetheless incredible all around. And the combination of their voices in succession is unbelievable!! Truly what more could anyone ask for? Amazing song, amazing lyrics, and just family fun (just kidding. I wouldn’t listen to this with your parents).

Dance:

Edge of Seventeen- Stevie Nicks

For the sake of full transparency I am definitely biased towards this song because I just turned seventeen and this song strikes a growing-up-and-leaving-the-nest chord within me. Also, I love Stevie Nicks more than anything in the world. But I do think this song is appropriate for the vibes of entering a new grade which I think is universal to all Bard students and it’s also fun to jump around to! The emotion and intensity and control in Stevie Nicks’ voice is so incredible it’ll knock your socks off.

Indie/ Alternative:

Harness Your Hopes (B-side)- Pavement

I can’t even list the number of times I’ve listened to this song just waiting for the guitar riff at the end. I promise the lyrics to this song will make you smile. Stephen Malkmus has such a good way of rhyming and using words it’s insane. I will admit this song has to grow on you a little but once it does it’s no joke addicting. This song almost made my personal favorite of the month because ugh it is just so fun to listen to.

Personal Favorite of the Month:

A$AP Forever REMIX- A$AP Rocky ft. T.I. Moby & Kid Cudi

THIS SONG! The symphonic instrumental, the lyrics, the flow, all of it wow. I encourage everyone to read the Genius lyrics page because the number of little stories this song tells and insights into A$APs’ life that are hidden in here is incredible. It’s arguable that Cudi’s verse carries this entire piece and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t listen to the song maybe twelve times over just waiting to hear his part. Also the name of the song is an homage to Wu-Tang which is just really dope. To me this song has the feeling of reflecting on how far you’ve progressed while simultaneously looking forward at what is yet to come. Overall amazing inspirational vibes. 10/10 recommend.
