Letter from the Editor

September 2016

Dear BHSEC,

When I think of the beginning of the school year, it’s not fresh books and falling leaves I think of, but rather a re-welcoming of turf into every fiber of my being and fickle air conditioners that work when they feel like it. This is the beauty and allure of BHSEC: perfectly imperfect. There’s no better place to document the incredible triumphs, as well as the more questionable events, that occur in and around our school than in the newspaper.

In previous years, The Bardvark may have seemed a bit disjointed. We’ve gone through a change of advisors, we’ve published behind schedule, and we haven’t always gotten the volume of writers or readers we’re aiming for.

When I first came to BHSEC, I entered knowing that I wanted to be on the newspaper. I remember going to the Club Fair in freshman year and telling myself that one day, I would be Editor-in-Chief. Here I am three years later, and my goal is to truly make this the most successful year yet. My editorial staff and I want to make the paper more accessible and interactive for the BHSEC student body, both through print and online. In fact, this is one of the earliest issues we have ever published.

However, the only way we can improve is with your help! We accept op-eds, news pieces, musings, focused free writes, reviews, drawings, and more from ANYONE, regardless of grade or skill. More often than not, when I ask people to write for the paper, I hear them say, “But I can’t write!” If you’re a BHSEC student, I am fairly positive that you can write. The editorial staff here at The Bardvark is here to help you, both with writing and content. You can write one article, or you can write twenty! We want to hear your voice.

In this issue, we have articles just from the editorial staff. We chose to do this so we could show you, hesitant writer, just some ideas of what we accept. We have news piece from within the school, news pieces from outside of school, and op-eds. But the possibilities are endless! We’re open and willing to accept any ideas for both one-time articles or monthly columns.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to any of the editors, our advisor Dr. Mazie (welcome back!), or contact us at bardvark@gmail.com.

Write on!
