Select Quotations from the Presidential Candidates

Max F. Neuman, ‘16

Quotations from the first four months of presidential debates.

Governor Jeb Bush, RFL: “You find a Democrat that’s for cutting taxes– cutting spending ten dollars, I’ll give them a warm kiss.”

Dr. Ben Carson, RMD: “What I agree with is that we need a significantly changed taxation system. And the one that I’ve advocated is based on tithing, because I think God is a pretty fair guy.”

Governor Lincoln Chafee, DRI: “On the issues. I have not changed on the issues. I was a liberal Republican, then I was an independent, and now I’m a proud Democrat. But I have not changed on the issues.”

Governor Chris Christie, RNJ: “It gets tougher when they get out of the womb. And when they’re the 16-year-old drug addict in the Florida county lockup, that life is just as precious as the life in the womb.”

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, DNY: “But we are not Denmark. I love Denmark. We are the United States of America. And it’s our job to rein in the excesses of capitalism so that it doesn’t run amok and doesn’t cause the kind of inequities we’re seeing in our economic system.

Senator Ted Cruz, RTX: The men and women on this stage have more ideas, more experience, more common sense than every participant in the Democratic debate. That debate reflected a debate between the Bolsheviks and the Mensheviks.”

Ms. Carly Fiorina, RCA: “I have led innovative businesses in the most highly competitive industry in the world for decades. The truth is the secret sauce of America is innovation, and entrepreneurship, it is why we must cut our government down to size, and hold it accountable.

Governor Jim Gilmore, RVA: We need to use our technological advantages, because what we’ve warned of is an international guerrilla movement that threatens this country. It’s going to happen in this country, there are going to be further attacks.”

Governor Martin O’Malley, DMD: “I would push to separate out these toobig-to-jail, too-big-to-fail banks, and put in place Glass-Steagall, a modern Glass-Steagall that creates a firewall so that this wreckage of our economy can never happen again.”

Senator Bernie Sanders, DVT: “Wall Street played by the rules? Who are we kidding? The business model of Wall Street is fraud. That’s what it is.”

Senator Jim Webb, DVA: “All right. Well, I’m trying to set a mark here so maybe we can get into a little more later on. This hasn’t been equal time.”
